Genetics for the Millennium!

Lets talk about two primary concerns for today's Shepard, consistency and uniformity.  Take a look at the two images of Corriedale ewe lambs on the left, these are part of our ewe lamb flock from 1999, then look at the Corriedale ewe lambs that are hiding behind the Rambouillet (sorry bout the picture, I will get them to cooperate later), look for head shape, body design and structure.  The image on the right was taken November 2000! This kind of consistency is welcome in any flock!

Lets define the terms Consistency and Uniformity:

bullet

Consistency:  The ability of the ewe or ram to throw the same type of lamb year after year and raise them till weaning time.  We look for sturdy ewes that can handle the stress of the Missouri weather (super hot and humid summers and cold wet winters) and not only raise the quality lambs we desire, but also provide some of the top handspinning fleeces for the breed in the world!  Just ask the Aussies, they absolutely fell in love with Norman!

bullet

Uniformity:  We break this term down in to three basic areas:

bulletType:  Breed characteristics to include head shape, black points, no horns or scurs.  Appearance, bright eyed and alert, heads up and back straight.  We like our rams to be masculine and our ewes to look feminine.
bulletStructure:  We are breeding a well muscled straight topped animal with the feet and legs set firmly under the corners of the body.  With correct balance to the animals size.  We demand good feet under our flocks and have worked for years to achieve this.
bulletFleece:  Wow, what can I say here... We demand a classic crimp, uniformity and luster.  We breed specifically for the handspinner and have too much to say about fleeces to list here, so check out our fleece pages to learn more about our fleece program.
