M & M Livestock maintains several distinctive flocks for
our fiber customers. We will cover each
of the flocks in this article. We have dedicated our flocks to the production
of the finest handspinning and hand felting
fleeces available in the world.
We hope that you have the opportunity to work with a MegliFleece soon
and experience the MegliFleece Advantage! Corriedale
White:
Meglifarms
maintains about 75 producing ewes and a number of replacement lambs. We constantly strive through our genetic
program to improve the quality of wool and meat production. We participate in Ram Production Testing
with the Dakota Ram Test for the purpose of wool evaluation and carcass merit. Our goals for the clip from this flock is to
produce the highest quality fleece that is clean, with good luster and
brightness of color, the classic Corriedale crimp, a staple length consistent
with our customers needs. Last, and
arguably the most important is to keep veggie matter and second cuts to a bare
minimum. We are constantly evaluating
our shearing times in order to insure that each fleece is sheared at its
prime. Every day is shearing day at M
& M Livestock! Colored: We are currently developing our Colored Corriedale
flock and they are producing awesome fleeces but we haven’t seen the
consistency that we want from these genetics yet. We will continue to work with this flock and sell all of the
fleeces that qualify for the MegliFleece title. Romney
White: We have a few
White Romney ewes and are working with the genetics, at this time we do not
have a consistent White Romney clip. Colored: M & M
Livestock is maintaining about 30 producing ewes and have replacement lambs on
hand. We are really proud of the work
these girls are doing for us. This flock
is producing a beautiful, consistent clip with colors ranging the full spectrum
of light silver to black. We are
constantly having to convince our customers that this is really Romney, we are
constantly getting e-mail back from our customers saying, “this can’t be
Romney, these feel great!” well, yes they are Romney and we are striving to
continue to improve the handle from this flock. Border Leicester
White: This breed is
new to us and we are still learning about the breed. It seems that in the last hundred years or so, that most American
Border Leicester breeders have got away from the breed standards. The white Border Leicester flock at M &
M represents the traditional Border Leicester fleece, soft and silky with great
luster and curl. These fleeces are a
joy for the handspinner and make some of the most incredible felt you have ever
seen. Colored: We are
currently searching for animals of this variant that meet our standards, as of
this time we have not been successful.
If you have some colored Border Leicester that you think may be
candidates for our breeding program, please e-mail us. Rambouillet
White: We have a small number of producing Bullets and are now expanding, they meet the rigid standards that we require here. We will have more fleeces and lambs available next year. |
